Devon Women kick off season in sunny Braunton
Devon v Cornwall, 17th April, Braunton CC

Devon kicked off their 2010 campaign with a resounding victory over neighbours Cornwall in the annual Tamar Shield fixture at Braunton CC. The side was shorn of several key players either through injury or non availability but still a decent run out. Devon’s Chance To Shine coach and England cricketer Caroline Atkins turned out for Devon and wasted no time in getting some runs under her belt as she shared a 169 run opening stand with Vicky Bowden before retiring for 108 from just 60 balls. There were useful contributions from Vicky Bowden who made 43, Giselle Ansley 36 and skipper Lottie Miles who made 25. Cornwall’s reply was a stuttering affair and despite being able to bat their 40 overs never got close to Devon’s 261-5 as their innings petered out to 138-8 from their allotted overs. Giselle Ansley 3-8 and debutant Emily Ward 2-9 were the pick of the bowlers. Full Scorecard

Devon 261-5 from 40 overs (C. Atkins 108, V. Bowden 43, G. Ansley 36; H. Grice 2-50, L. Daniels 1-26), Cornwall 138-8 from 40 overs (E. Pascoe 22, F. Nicholls 19; G. Ansley 3-8, E. Ward 2-9). Devon bt Cornwall by 123 runs

Devon v Somerset, 18th April, Braunton CC

Devon entertained Somerset and the once again superb Braunton CC. Facing a Division 1 side would be a far tougher proposition than Cornwall on the previous day. Devon were without skipper Lottie Miles and Caroline Atkins could not play so the batting looked a little light. Somerset batted first but were soon in trouble as Axminster pace girl Hannah Singelton grabbed two early wickets to remove both openers to reduce Somerset to 23-2. There followed a super century partnership between Frances Wilson and Sophie Luff to steer Somerset into calmer waters. Wilson fell for 105 with Luff falling for 60. Somerset finsished their innings on 271 - 5 of their 50 overs with Hannah Singleton 2-58 and Rebecca Donohue 2-40 bowling exceptionally well as did Giselle Ansley, her ten overs going for just 25 runs. Devon lost their first three wickets for 32 which set them back on their heels, however a stand of 56 between Giselle Ansley and the very impressive Ali Kelly, just 13 making her senior debut, gave some respectability to the scoreline. Their dismissals triggered a disappointing collapse as 6 wickets fell for just 15 runs resulting in a total of 103 all out from 42 overs. Full Scorecard

Still a very worthwhile weekend, played on excellent wickets and in beautiful sunshine. Thank you to all at Braunton for their incredible hospitality, in particular Gary and Paul, Kelly for the food and not forgetting Karl for all he did around the clubhouse to make the weekend a success.
